VIDEO MONDAY NOON: A new era for education in Melton dawned at the unveiling of a multi-million pound project yesterday.
A masterplan which will see a purpose-built school, sixth-form block and sports facilities was revealed at an open day in King Edward VII - the site of the proposed campus.

Chairman of governors David Davies said: "The launch of the proposed campus masterplan marks a new beginning for King Edward VII.

"There is a lot of hard work before us and we have a difficult year or so ahead as we move through some of the changes but we are going to end up with new state-of-the-art buildings and a fantastic curriculum.

"We have great experience teaching at Key Stage 4 and the fact the post-16 learning centre and some great sporting facilities will also be based on this campus will be a real advantage for us."

The transformation will see a £24 million investment into the King Edward VII School campus, with a purpose-built school for up to 800, 11 to 16-year-olds.

It comes as part of a £45 million reorganisation of education in Melton and the Vale of Belvoir which will see three secondary schools, rather than one.

The proposed plans for King Edward VII will be part funded by the sale of about five hectares of land to be developed into between 150 and 175 new homes.

Consultants Capita Lovejoy said it would like to retain the old grammar school buildings, which could be converted into flats, but no decision on this had yet been made.

The revamp will also include improved sports facilities and state-of-the-art computer equipment, making it one of the most advanced school sites in Leicestershire.

It has also been proposed to include a running track, as well as build rugby pitches and tennis courts.

David Davies, chairman of governors, said: "The strategy the county council has adopted for the reorganisation of secondary education in Melton and the Vale of Belvoir made it inevitable that King Edward VII would see the greatest changes, but I believe the future of the school is very bright."

County Council Leader, David Parsons, said: "These are terrifically exciting times for everyone at King Edward VII and all those involved in the reorganisation of education in Melton Mowbray and the Vale of Belvoir.

"The fact this is the largest ever investment into a school campus in Leicestershire shows the determination of the County Council and its partner schools to work together to create the very best learning and teaching environment possible."

Sandra Curran, programme executive for the schools reorganisation at County Hall, said: "These are tremendously positive proposals for the site which will offer our young people some fantastic opportunities.

"The 11-16 school will be of the right size to give children that feeling of community and belonging while the post-16 centre will offer anywhere anytime learning as ICT is used in new ways to deliver the curriculum."

Planning applications for the post-16 centre and 11 to 16 school are expected to be submitted in August and October.
