MELTON'S new Mayor, Elaine Holmes, has opened her family photo album to Melton Times readers.
She was born at Spinney Farm in Melton in 1943 to Ted and Win Atkinson and was educated locally.
After leaving school at 16 she embarked on a number of short cookery courses but had to abandon her chosen career when her father fell ill and she was needed back on the farm.
She married Richard Easom, a farmer at Grimston, aged 20 and they had two daughters, Fiona and Penny.
Elaine said: "Given my upbringing and working life I regard myself both as a Meltonian and as a true countrywoman. My family has lived in the borough for many generations and I've always been an outdoors person.
"I've been a member of Melton Young Farmers' Club since the age of 10 and have always ridden, joining the Quorn and later the Belvoir Hunt."
Despite bringing up a young family and working on the farm Elaine found time to help form Grimston WI and was a Friend of St Mary's Hospital in Melton, taking the elderly out to tea and helping with meals on wheels.
Elaine and Richard split up after their daughters were grown up.
She married her second husband, Michael Holmes, in 1987 and now lives in Goadby Marwood where she has embarked on a second career as the owner of a stud, for which she has become well known.
The first horse she bred, Mead More Magic, trained by the late Jim Harris at Eastwell, ran at Glorious Goodwood, while her current national hunt horse Pelican Point, has notched up wins at Sedgefield and Uttoxeter in recent months.
Elaine, who represents Waltham Ward as an Independent, has been a councillor since 1994 and previously served as Mayor in 1997-8.
Over the years she has played a key role on the planning committee, striving to preserve the special character of Melton and villages in the borough while not standing in the way of progress. She has also been president of Melton Young Farmers' Club for many years and is a trustee of the Hunting Museum.
Elaine's charities will be Mount Group Riding for the Disabled, which is based at Somerby, and diabetes locally, but she also intends to instill more pride in the borough's rich history during her term of office.
She said: "Our future lies in our past in so many ways and we should build on it and celebrate it. Melton is unique and we have so much to be proud of."
Elaine added: "The Mount group has a membership of 180 and caters for all disabilities. It is run entirely by volunteers who also have to raise £20,000 a year to keep it running.
"Diabetes is the fastest growing condition in the country and I want to help patients in the borough through local surgeries."
Mrs Holmes' civic service will be held in due course at Chadwell Church.
