READER Jim Randle sent in this letter in response to our photo of the overturned phone box in Nottingham Street ('I think I've been cut off', Times Past, April 23).
It shows the aftermath of a bizarre hit-and-run incident in the mid-1970s when a departing lorry's doors swung open and knocked the booth over with a caller still inside. He escaped unhurt but there was quite a commotion as power was cut to shops, activating their alarms.
'WHAT a delight to see the photo of the phone box and my old friends in Nottingham Street. I took the photo myself out of my van window and gave copies to the lads.
'I bet I still have the negative but my filing system needs a bit of TLC.
I was driving along Nottingham Street in another BT van at the time and came upon the scene. How things have changed.
'There is Reg the traffic warden supervising the situation. What a gentleman. There is no ticket on John Burton's van and Reg didn't book me for stopping and taking the photo. I bet we wouldn't get away with such blatant law-breaking today! That said, who would book Buzby?
'Jeff West, who is also in the picture, has now retired and lives in Ilminster and the last I heard, Colin Duly went to Australia. John and I are still in Melton.'
