THE Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Jennifer, Lady Gretton, has hosted an evening celebration in honour of the hard work, dedication and commitment of the Women's Land Army and Timber Corps during the Second World War.
Receptions, like the one at County Hall which included a sing-a-long and a celebration cake, are being held across the country following the issue of a special commemorative badge.
Lady Gretton, who lives in Somerby, said: "Our nation owes a huge debt of gratitude to the Women's Land Army and Timber Corps who, during the dark days of the war, provided food and energy for the nation. Their contribution was as important as that of anyone else who served their country. During their service great friendships were formed and the reception was a great way for some of the ladies to rekindle these friendships and to make new ones, share memories and experiences."
