PICTURES and memories about the much-loved Sarson School keep on coming with a programme from the opening ceremony the latest piece of memorabilia dug out, writes Ben Truslove.
Ann Allsopp (68), of HighfieldAvenue, was in the first intake at the girls' school, coming up from the Grove in September 1952.
She said: "It was a lovely school and it seemed really big after coming from primary school.
"My class was 1B2 and everyone was from the Grove. We stayed together right through school until we left at 15. It's very sad that it is being pulled down."
The programme details how the school came about and reveals plans to build a boys' school next door so the three
centres, including the grammar school, would complement each other.
It reads: "Although the Sarson School is a secondary school for girls, its immediate purpose is not to improve facilities for secondary education, although it affords that incidental advantage, but to meet two other pressing needs.
"These are, firstly, the need for more accommodation for children of primary school age whose numbers have grown rapidly, partly by the development of the town but mainly because of the
unusually high birthrate at the end of the war; and secondly, to meet the greatly increased demand for technical education which is a pre-requisite of the country's industrial efficiency."
The booklet includes a picture of Alderman Thomas Sarson JP and says the school was named after him because of his work for education in the county.
He was county councillor on the education committee from 1918 becoming vice-chairman from 1943 to 1950 as well as chairman of the governors of Melton Grammar School, Melton Secondary Modern Schools and Melton Technical College.
Sarson Secondary School for Girls was officially opened at 2pm by a Mrs G. Fisher on Friday, October 12, 1952.
We also have a picture of Miss Thurman's first-year class in 1960.
First on the left of the front row is our very own receptionist Sue Brown, who hasn't changed a bit.

The event to celebrate the life of the Sarson School on June 27 is making headway and there is now a dedicated hotline, on (01664) 484335, for people interested in going.
The school is due to be pulled down in the summer to make way for the new multi-million pound post-16 centre
serving Melton and the Vale of Belvoir. A new 11-16 King Edward VII School is being developed out of the modern
Harris building and the existing former grammar school buildings.
