Anyone in the Melton borough who enjoys walking is being invited to join in with a popular group which organises regular strolls and social activities.

Melton Mowbray Ramblers have launched their summer programme, which involves a range of walks over various distances through to September.

Summer evening walks are between four and six miles and there are also Friday morning eight to 10-mile walks once a month with a pub lunch at the end.

Spokesperson Sara Dickinson said: “The summer evening ones are very popular local walks and also very sociable as many walkers relax afterwards in a local pub.

“We also have the weekend walks and have options of leisurely local ambles of around four to six miles or walks of eight to 10 miles or 15 mile walks, both locally and in the surrounding counties.

“All our walks are led by experienced leaders. The benefits of walking have been publicised a lot recently and alongside the obvious health benefits it provides a good social network which can benefit your mental wellbeing too.”

Melton Ramblers also have various social events, which include an annual narrow boat trip, theatre trips, skittle nights and holidays and the group have also recently run a basic map reading course. They will be following this up with a more advanced session later in the summer.”

People interested can join the group on up to four walks before they are asked to consider becoming a member. Joining will then cost £3 a month (£33 annually) for individuals or £4 a month (£44 a year) for joint-membership. All ages and capabilities are welcome.

There is also an opportunity to join the national Ramblers organisation, which runs 456,000 walks very year using its team of volunteers. Members also get an online library of 2,OOO walking routes in Britain, a quarterly award-winning Walk magazine and special offer from partner businesses and organisations.
