Everyone Active is celebrating the 50th birthday of Melton’s Waterfield Leisure Centre by holding a host of free family activities at the Dalby Road facility.
Events taking place throughout the day on Saturday (May 16) will include free swim sessions, inflatable pool sessions, soft play and swim4fitness sessions.
This week (up until Saturday) the centre has also been giving away daily prizes to anyone who takes out a membership or books onto swim lessons at the centre. Each of the new members will be put into a draw to win one of 50 prizes, which will range from free swim sessions to a brand new 40-inch television.
Alistair Gould, Everyone Active’s sales manager at Waterfield Leisure Centre, said: “This is a very big birthday for the leisure centre and we’re very excited for the fun events being held to celebrate its achievement.
“The centre is an important part of Melton and it has come a long way since its opening in 1965. It provides a place for the local community to engage in a wide range of sports, fitness and children’s activities. We’re extremely proud of the centre and we hope lots of people will join us for the festivities.”
The purpose-built centre was officially opened by the Marquess of Exeter on May 8, 1965 following 10 years of fundraising from the local community.
Before the official opening a plaque was unveiled in the foyer by George Atkinson who was chairman of the Melton Toc H group when a public meeting was called to spark off the project in 1955.
The centre originally only featured a main pool, with a smaller pool following in 1973 after six years of being built. The first cold drink machine was installed at the centre in August 1969 and the first public telephone appeared in 1972.
