‘Tis the season for festive fairs

THE countdown to Christmas starts this weekend judging by the number of fairs opening their doors to help people get in the festive spirit and find those special gifts, writes Michael Cooke.
Old Dalby WI is one year old and is celebrating by hosting a Christmas themed craft event at the village hall on Saturday (10am-4pm).
There will be 10 craft stalls selling a range of home-made and branded gifts including cakes, wooden toys, homewares, cosmetics and jewellery.
In addition there will be five ‘make and take’ tables for people to try their hand at different crafts and take the resulting items, such as chocolates, Christmas tree decorations and gift boxes, home with them.
Tickets cost £6 for entry and four ‘make and take’ tables or £1 entry, available in advance by calling Heather on 0773 493 6047 or on the door.
Saltby is holding a crafts and produce fair and unveiling its own 2012 calendar at St Peter’s Church on Saturday (2pm-5pm) in aid of the church and village social committee Saltby 2000.
Martin Quilter, chairman of Saltby 2000, said: “The fair will offer the chance to buy original gifts for Christmas made by some of the area’s most talented craftspeople and food producers while raising funds for two local causes at the heart of our community.”
St John the Baptist Church in Buckminster will be displaying new and old cribs from around the world alongside various stalls at its Nativity Festival this weekend (Friday, 2pm-4pm; Saturday 10am-4pm; and Sunday (11am-4pm). Refreshments available.
Rutland Open Studios Artists are holding a ‘Party in the Castle’ in Oakham this weekend (10am-4pm both days) with original artwork in all its forms for sale at reasonable prices (see picture).
All Saints Church in Asfordby will be hosting its Winter Wonderland event this weekend (10am-4pm both days) featuring refreshments, raffles and stands from local organisations. The U3A guitarists, led by Brian Donovan, will be performing at 2pm on the Saturday.
A traditional Christmas fair will be held at the village hall in Harby on Sunday (11am-2pm). In addition to the stalls there will be children’s games, hot turkey rolls, mulled wine, coffee and mince pies.
A Victorian Christmas market will be held in and around the church in Barkby on Saturday (3pm-6pm) with seasonal stalls, Santa’s Grotto and much more.
There will be a Christmas Fair in the Methodist Chapel in Somerby on Saturday (10am-12.30pm) with cakes and home produce, new goods stalls, tombola and brunch. Entry free
