OLYMPIANS from London 2012 will be big attractions at the latest promotional event to launch the refurbished Waterfield Leisure Centre this weekend.

Ross Davenport, who competed in the men’s 4x200m relay, women’s Team GB water polo captain Fran Leighton and synchronised swimming coach Kelly-Anne Russell will be passing on their expertise to 150 children aged eight to 14 on Sunday.

Youngsters will learn how to swim fast and be coached in the skills associated with synchronised swimming and water polo.

The free Zoggs Oceans of Fun session is being organised by Total Swimming, which puts on swim activities throughout the country using leading personalities in the sport.

Youngsters who want to take part must be able to swim at least 25m unaided. They can register by emailing waterfieldinfo@everyoneactive.com calling (01664) 563550 or by popping in at the centre. Places are limited.

Mayor of Melton, Councillor John Illingworth, will officially launch the weekend of swimming activities at the centre in Dalby Road on Saturday.

The main and small pools at the centre were opened for the first time on Saturday and those lucky enough to be first to take the plunge enjoyed the experience.

Nicola Scothern (13), a pupil at John Ferneley College in Melton, said: “It is fantastic. The pools are bigger and I love the idea of the changing village.

“The lockers are a lot bigger than in the old place which was a bit dated.

“I will be swimming once or twice a week now whereas I used to go once or twice a month.”

Jennifer Blatherwick (16), who attends Brooksby Melton College, wasn’t so keen on the unisex changing facilities. But she said: “The new pool is a lot better than the old one.

“There is less chlorine in the water so your eyes don’t sting and the showers don’t go from hot to really cold like the old ones used to.”

The revamped leisure centre’s new gym and its multi-activity room and studio for exercise classes will open this weekend.

Work has now begun updating the old gym which should be completed in the next month.
