A FORMER EastEnders star has taken to Melton’s airwaves with local radio presenter Jonny Mac to co-host a one-off radio show.
Cheryl Fergison, whose character Heather Trott was killed off by the BBC soap in March, visited the town to take part in a three-hour drive time show on 103 The Eye community radio station on Wednesday.
The collaboration was set up after Cheryl and Jonny got in touch over social networking site Twitter.
Part-time freelancer Jonny (21) said: “It was an incredible experience to work with Cheryl, while we were on the air she told me that George Michael, who is her friend, had tuned in and was listening online which felt really surreal.
“Cheryl is such a funny person with a great sense of humour and we got on really well. Local radio is important to the community and the fact that she saw this and supported 103 The Eye is great.
“It’s impossible to know how many people tuned in to hear us but I think the show not only gave the radio station a good boost but also the town because Cheryl contacted a lot of her friends to let them know she would be on air and I know a lot of people in Melton, who had never tuned in before, told me they were listening.
“The feedback has really been amazing and the support on Twitter has gone through the roof, it’s a great feeling to get such positive feedback and know that I’ve done a job well.”
Jonny, who started hosting the show while still at school, is now working to get the show set up online so that people can listen again if they missed it.
The duo are also in talks over setting up a regular radio show, which might take place in Kent where Cheryl lives.
Cheryl of Sidcup in Kent said: “I only got into Twitter after I left EastEnders - you weren’t supposed to be on social media while you were on the show.
“Jonny followed me and I make a point of checking out people’s profiles. I gave his show a listen online and thought he was really good.
“I have a good laugh with him, we have a good rapport - he has a dry sense of humour and I’m as mad as a hatter.”
Cheryl recently appeared on Celebrity Big Brother, she also appears in new Sky Living comedy The Spa, due to air next month, and is set to star in a pantomime in Chatham, her home county.
