TRICK or treaters are being urged to only visit homes where people are displaying a poster which says they are welcome.

The poster has been launched by Leicestershire Police along with councils across the county as part of a campaign to reduce anti-social behaviour on and around Halloween.

On one side of the poster it reads, ‘Trick or Treaters Welcome,’ and on the other side the message reads, ‘No Thanks to Trick or Treaters.’

In Melton about 580 posters have been ordered by the Neighbourhood Watch and are in the process of being distributed to the elderly and the vulnerable in the run up to October 31.

Eric Tindle, Melton’s Neighbourhood Watch coordinator, said: “I think it’s very important that we get these posters out to the people who will benefit from them.

“Some people are nervous about answering the door at night when its dark and putting a poster up will mean that they won’t have to.

“It’s fine when small children knock on their door but when elderly teenagers get involved it can be quite threatening.”

The poster, designed by the Anti-Social Behaviour Delivery Group, which is made up of representatives of the police and local authorities, is also available to collect from Melton Police Station as well as online.

The group is advising members of the public to display the poster in a front window or against the glass of a front door.

Superintendent Mark Newcombe, lead officer for anti-social behaviour at Leicestershire Police, said: “Those who go door-to-door on Halloween should be mindful that not everybody will want to join in the festivities. Look out for the poster and kindly miss the houses on your route which display the no thanks message.”
