MORE than 1,000 people of all ages dived into a range of free activities during a two-day festival to mark the official re-opening of the refurbished Waterfield Leisure Centre.

Mayor of Melton John Illingworth officially launched the weekend of activities at the revamped centre.

Families were invited to attend family fun sessions and inflatable sessions in the swimming pool while younger children were catered for in the brand new studio where a range of activities for under-fives were hosted by leisure centre staff.

A number of group exercise classes, free to attend, were also running during the afternoon on Saturday and Sunday.

The new gym was open and operational for the weekend with visitors being able to try out the new equipment which includes interactive screens on the new Precor running machines.

Children also had fun trying out the interactive Trixter bikes, which register your movement in the same way as a computer game, with youngsters challenging each other on courses.

Sunday saw the launch of the activity-packed free Zoggs Oceans of Fun event, with youngsters able to benefit from expert coaching given by London 2012 Team GB Olympians.

Passing on their expertise were Ross Davenport, who competed in the men’s 4x200m relay, and women’s water polo captain Fran Leighton.

Waterfield contract manager Ian Bradgate said: “We had over 300 new Everyone Active cards given out over the course of the weekend which is fantastic news as this demonstrates new people using the leisure centre.

“Feedback from our customers has been fantastic. They’re all amazed by the great use of space we have. It almost feels like we’ve built a new centre from scratch.”

The Waterfield’s full gym modernisation programme is due to be completed by the end of November along with the group cycling studio and health suite downstairs.
