MELTON Show brought so much enjoyment to visitors of all ages - as these old archive pictures show.

As we revealed in last week’s Melton Times, the borough’s biggest and longest-running event has come to an end after show organisers Gill West and Derek Whitehouse decided to call it a day after 30 years.

The event regularly attracted tens of thousands of show-goers each year and also enabled charities to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The first-ever show was held on May 30, 1983. The idea of holding the day-long spectacle came about after a contingent of Melton traders visited Melton’s Dutch twin town Kapelle, which held its own ‘Kappelle Tag’ or Kappelle Day. It was such a success it was decided to hold a similar event for Melton.

And what a success the Melton Show turned out to be.

Who can forget the Musical Ride of the King’s Troop performed to the music of the 1812 overture, the Household Cavalry, the Band of the Royal Marines beating retreat, the thrills of the Flying Gunners motorbike team, the jig performed by the sailors of HMS Sultan, the chariot racing, gun run and so many more memorable moments?
