Big turn-out for start of hunt season

HORSES, hounds and riders turned out in force to mark the start of the five-month hunting season.

A field of more than 150 mounted hunt followers gathered at the Quorn Hunt kennels in Kirby Bellars and spent the morning chasing a scented trail laid over a designated course.

One particular feature of the day was the fact about 40 of the women rode side saddle, led by Emma Brown (41).

She said: “It’s an old tradition for female hunt followers which is rather rare these days, but is something we are trying to promote to keep it going.

“Our youngest rider was about 12 and we also had a lady travel from Belgium to join us which was marvellous.

“It felt great to be back in the saddle and to see so many people having fun.

The hunt will meet four times a week until the end of March with the highlight of the season being the traditional Boxing Day meet.
