REVIEW: Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood
Melton Theatre, until Saturday
MELTON'S got talent - there's no doubt about it.
Hundreds of youngsters took to the stage for the annual Trevonne panto and the show is a sparkling and witty extravaganza which helps cheer up these long, dark winter days.
This is the 31st panto put on by Trevonne and this year's choice is Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood.
The telling of the story is interspered with dance after dance by pupils from the stage school showcasing their talents. It is a bit like a firework display with a continuous string of dazzling and explosive performances. Hayley Sessions does a fantastic job with the choreography and the routines show real inventiveness.
The school teaches ballet, tap, modern, gymnastics and musical theatre which are all represented and includes all ages and levels of ability.
In usual panto style there's plenty of witty banter with topical reference to Melton's much-needed bypass and X-Factor's Jedward.
Dame Daisy, played by Pete Banfield, and Ruff and Ready, played by Rachel Makins and Katie Buchanan, have the audience in stitches and Wayne Hazeldine is a perfectly evil Sheriff of Nottingham.
There are great performances from Zoe Elliot as Robin Hood, and Rachel Hall as Maid Marion,
Others to mention are Abigail Whetton, Bethanie Lawton Sergeant, Alys Grealsey and Kitty McKay (Babes), Thomas Scott and Michael Welsh (Friar Tuck), Edward Bates, Emily Shaw, Rosie Evans, Ria Thompson (Merry Men), Heather Loftus (Little John), Hayley Crossland (Will Scarlett), Lois Cropper and Eluned Banfield (Woodland Sprite).
Add to all this the bright and colourful costumes and effective sets and you have a show not to be missed.
The school, started by Yvonne and Trevor Makins, has become a real family affair with the pair taking active roles in the production, along with daughters Rachel and choreographer Hayley and grandchildren Hattie and Tilly.
The production team also includes Peter Jackson (musical, lighting and sound director), John Green and Cliff Jeffcote (stage managers).
The show started on Saturday and there are performances every night at 7pm until Saturday and also a Saturday matinee at 2pm.
To book call the box office on (01664) 851111 or Act One on (01664) 566000.
