TROPIC Thunder (15) is Ben Stiller's latest directorial offering, and stars some of Hollywood's finest comic talents (Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr and Stiller himself) in a slam-bang satire of war epics including Apocalypse Now, Platoon and Full Metal Jacket.
The film starts with a fake ad for an energy drink called Booty Sweat and a trio of bogus trailers and are hugely enjoyable, but the movie itself is a bit of a disappointment.
Stiller and his co-stars stumble upon a drug lord who thinks he is witnes
sing an American invasion and all hell breaks loose. Life imitates art imitates life as the cast takes on a well-armed militia with only prop weapons and method acting to save them.
Robert Downey Jr steals every scene as the blond, blue-eyed Australian who undergoes a skin pigmentation procedure to convincingly portray a wisecracking African-American sergeant.
Just when you thought George Lucas had milked his intergalactic cash cow dry with endless re-issues of the Star Wars saga on DVD, he executive-produces Star Wars: The Clone Wars (PG), a computer-animated
adventure that slips neatly into the narrative divide between Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith. It's not altogether convincing but will no doubt excite a new generation of fans.Set in 1939 London, Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day (PG), stars Frances McDormand as the film's
titular character, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew,a recently unemployed middle-aged governess. The film follows her as she responds to an advertisement for work as a 'social secretary' and is catapulted into the glamorous world of famous American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams). Now showingTROPIC
