Surprise retirement party for long-standing trader
John Hindley at his surprise retirement party with friends
A RETIRING Melton market stall trader, who has been selling books in Market Place every Wednesday for 32 years, has been honoured by customers with a surprise party writes Katy Peacock.
John Hindley, whose wife Pamela started the business in 1980, is preparing to retire from his stall next Wednesday.
He said: “Book selling is hard work and lifting heavy boxes physically takes its toll - it’s much more of a young man’s game.”
Friends and customers turned out in force to mark John’s imminent retirement last Wednesday hanging up banners and balloons.
Peter Burgess, a regular customer and friend, said: “It’s like a social event coming to John’s stall, he has become a friend to all of us and it will be a great loss when his stall has gone.”
In the run up to his retirement the prices of books on John’s stall will be reduced.
